SSNR Pangolin Project
As we celebrate World Pangolin Day in 2025, we want to take a moment to reflect on a few of the highlights from this past year of working with Temminck’s Ground Pangolins, while also acknowledging those who work so hard to protect this incredible species.
One of these people is Section Ranger for the Sabi Sand’s northern region, Wilson Baloyi, who designed SSNR’s pangolin protection fence.
Wilson has spent the past 39 years working in the field of conservation, reserve security and anti-poaching.
Although his background is primarily in security, Wilson’s passion for protecting wildlife led him to design a specialised fence along the reserve’s existing boundary fence to prevent smaller wildlife species from being able to get caught in low-lying electrified wires.
Through Wilson’s dedication to protecting wildlife both big and small, he has contributed greatly to safeguarding our pangolin population.
In August 2024, the full 53km length of the reserve’s fenced boundary was completed, marking a crucial milestone in the effort to secure the future of pangolins here.
Pangolin Recovery and Release:
During 2024, the SSNR team was involved in recovering serval pangolins from the illegal wildlife trade and was able to successfully release one of these pangolins onto the reserve. This was a profound and deeply rewarding project for the SSNR team, as so many of these pangolins are lost to poaching every year.
We believe that the protection of every single pangolin is imperative to conserving this vulnerable species and will remain committed to doing our very best to help conserve Temmick’s Ground Pangolins.
Thank you to everyone who has been involved in our pangolin project over the past year and to all those who continue to support our efforts in conserving this unique species – Happy World Pangolin Day!
